Services

Please note this is an overview of the typical services provided by MBLD. To discuss a potential project and to receive a full fee proposal document with detailed scope of services please contact us at: [email protected] or +44 (0)20 77295633. Design work can be described in four stages.

Concept/Preliminary Design

Meetings and discussion are held to establish project requirements, design direction and other factors relevant to the lighting design. Lighting designer requires a brief from architect, interior designer and the client to define scope boundaries and aspirations. Meetings are held with design architect or interior designer to establish design ideas and philosophy. MBLD then prepares sketches and illustrations to convey design intent and presents these to the architect, interior designer and the client.

Preliminary mark up lighting layouts will be prepared on reflected ceiling/floor plans and or elevations issued to the Lighting Consultant. Preliminary luminaire schedules shall be prepared indicating type of luminaire and lamp. Indicative sketch details shall be prepared where necessary to illustrate proposals and to indicate any likely builder’s work, which may require detailing from the architect/interior designer. An indication of the lighting control system requirement will be prepared where required. Preliminary budget costing shall be prepared in conjunction with the preliminary scheme documentation. Please note that the emergency lighting design is not included and should form part of the Electrical Consultants scope of works, however, this can sometimes be negotiated to be part of MBLD’s scope.

Design Development and Documentation

This stage commences after approval of the preliminary scheme design and budget from the client or their nominated representative.

MBLD will complete all of their reflected ceiling and floor layouts on AutoCAD files supplied to the Lighting Consultant, showing type of fitting by alpha numeric reference and dimensional offsets where applicable. Where lighting equipment is to be built into a special detail, sections with necessary dimensions and suggested construction methods shall be prepared for incorporation by the architect, or interior designer in their final drawings.

MBLD will prepare full equipment specifications, with details of luminaire dimensions, lamp data, any relevant photometric information and suppliers contact details. Control/dimmer schedules with control plate specifications, circuiting etc. are also provided with sufficient information for the lighting control manufacturer to proceed with their detailed design.

During this stage cost schedules for luminaires, lamps plus associated control gear/transformers, and dimming control system are updated and issued to the client. Where necessary site trials and mock-ups are conducted to assess the visual effect, proposed detailing and the specification.

Tender Documentation and Review

Information prepared at the previous design stage shall be discussed and agreed with the Client prior to its issue to the Electrical Consultant, for inclusion within his tender package.

The lighting consultant shall, if required in liaison with the Electrical Consultant and Quantity Surveyor, assess returned tenders and advise on suitability. If the Contractor or Client wishes to submit a set of approved equals, the Lighting Consultant will, as part of the contract, review one set of alternatives. Working samples together with photometrics and manufacturers cut sheet shall be provided by the Contractor for inspection. MBLD shall, if required, advise on final placement of orders.

Implementation and Commissioning

Day to day supervision of the installation is deemed the role of the Electrical Consultant.

When mock-ups or lighting trials are organised the Lighting Consultant will be available to assess visual effects, subject to reasonable notice.
